I I i mm i ii Children's author Ann Herbert Scott of Reno, whose book Cowboy Country featuring Elko County has just been published, is planning to autograph books Oct 2 at the Elko Convention Center, beginning at 10 a.m. The event is being sponsored by the Friends of the Elko County Library, which will be selling her books in the convention center lobby.

Scott also will present a program on writing children's books in Western settings during the Nevada Library Association convention slated for Oct 1 and 2 in Elko. Cowboy Country "is the story of a kid who has never been to Cowboy Country," Scott said earlier this week. The book features a character based on the late Frank Baker of Mountain City, she said. "I talked to him over a period of many years at his ranch five miles south of Mountain City," she said. And the book's illustrator, Ted Le-win, based his drawings on Frank Baker's brother, Ted, and his grandson, Brett Badger.

Scott dedicated the book to Frank Baker, and Lewin's dedication is to Ted Baker and Brett Badger. The author and illustrator also used details from ranch life at several area ranches and Scott said she drew from "many, many interviews with old buckaroos." Cowboy Country has received "wonderful reviews," the author said when she visited the Elko County Library. Kirkus Review states that the book has "wonderfully well-honed descriptions authentic information presented with real artistry. The book also received a starred review Author Ann Herbert Scott holds an autographed copy of her new book, which she then presented to children's librarian Sara Jones, left, at the Elko County Library.
