Monday, October 17, 1994 ELKO DAILY FREE PRESS, Elko, Nevada 7 Local sports Girls' soccer team wins Indians blank Fallon, 4-0, for historic triumph -Bi -r SB 1 and Emily Bassier turned in solid showings at halfback and Sara Santti put out a strong effort at fullback. Sindlinger said with the win the girls' have a lot of confidence that can be built on going into the final four matches of the season. Elko heads out on a two-game road trip this weekend with Sparks and Reed, teams which both defeated the Tribe earlier in the season. However, the coach does not foresee a rerun of the first encounters. "Now with a little confidence we might be a little better," he explained.

"We'll be competitive." A 5 tUI 1 i'ST. ft P- Elated. That one word describes the reaction of Elko High School's girls' soccer team when Shannon Colquhoun and Alix Martinez combined for a pair of goals each to power the Indians past Fallon, 4-0, Saturday afternoon at Mountain View Park. It was the first win ever for Elko's first-ever girls' soccer squad. "Sooner or later it had to happen," Coach Al Sindlinger said.

Colquhon agreed. "We knew we were going to win at some point," she said. "I wasn't surprised because we were playing pretty good." And they did. Put it in the record book it is history. Elko has a win in Nevada AAA League girls' soccer.

Elko's record stands at 1-9 with two ties. Martinez opened the scoring for Elko with a shot into the upper corner of the net at the 20-minute mark of the first half. Colquhoun followed in that period with a long breakway dribbler that she punched through past the Fallon goalie from about 18 feet out to give the Indians' a 2-0 lead at the break. "I was trying to score so many times and I was getting frustrated because I wanted it so bad," Colquhoun recalled. She said she got a run on the shot and then nailed the net "low and right between the goalies' legs." In the second half, Martinez and Colquhoun each scored again for the Tribe.

Early in the period Martinez claimed control of a loose ball and sent it into the net to balloon Elko's lead to 3-0. Calquhon kicked in a long shot for the final score. "I wasn't even expecting that," Colquhon remembered. "The goalie had a bad goal kick, and I just brought it up and kicked it into the right low corner of the net." Elko goalie Karen Ronk saved a penalty shot in the first half to help whitewash the Greenwave. Except for the penalty shot, the Fallon offensive punch was controlled by a strong Elko defense.

"Between Kristin Lind and Mandy Coleman on defense they didn't let them have much of a chance," Sindlinger explained. He said Shannon Mitchell Elko senior Ryan Butler, center led teammates Ed Wynne and Jeff Salisbury out at the start of Saturday's Elko Invitational cross country meet. Butler won the 3.1 -mile race in 17:57. Elko's boys finished second to Galena in the 14-team event. Butler, Gerber place 1-2 at Elko Invitational meet Creek.

Other Spartans were: Ken Rothwell, 57th; Mike Lett, 88th; Jason Haskins, 89th; James Barbre, 90th; and Steve Hrdlicka, 91st. In the girls' race, Reed's Audrey Townsell sparked the Raiders to a huge victory. The defending AAA state champs scored 35 points to beat second-place Galena by 85 points for the title. Townsell took the early lead and clocked 21:59. Reed's first five girls all finished among the top 13 in the race.

Garcia the defending AA state champ stayed close to Townsell Elko senior Gina Cortez, right, tried to get the ball away from Fallon 's Renee Barnett during Saturday's AAA soccer game. "We can still get a couple more wins," Sindlinger predicted. Elko's girls are not looking past this weekend, but the final home stand will provide two match ups where Sindlinger sees "good oppor-tunties" to increase the season mark.

The Indians will close out the season with Galena and South Tahoe. Elko tied Galena, 2-2, in the first meeting this fall and was edged by South Tahoe, 1-0. "We should be able to win the rest of our games if we keep it," a proud Colquhoun predicted. slips, 2-1 Copenhaver not only scored Elko's only goal but played exceptionally well as the team's set-up man up front, according to McLaren. He also praised Eric Bassier effort at defensive midfielder filling in for the injured Daron Lind.

Another defensive standout was Dirk Hooiman. "He kept control back there," McLaren commented. "That's why Fallon only had 10 shots on goal." Elko was plagued by waist-high shots on goal and couldn't seem to get the ball down low, according to the coach. "It was just one of those things, we just couldn't put them down low where the goalie couldn't reach them," he explained. "We need to work on some finishing skills and getting the ball down low and in the corners." He diagnosied part of the problem as over-zealous goal attempts.

"I think they are trying so hard to score that they are just booming it away," McLaren explained. This weekend's road trip opens with a 5 p.m. Friday match at Sparks followed by an 11:30 a.m. game with second place Reed. hurt," Reeder said.

"The good news is he's fine and recovering." Spring Creek also won the junior varsity game, 20-6. Thomas Slater put Spring Creek ahead to stay when he scored on an interception at the Sparks' three-yard line with 3:31 left in the first quarter. Kevin Monoghan ran the conversion for an 8-0 lead. Sparks answered on its next drive with a 66-yard run, and the score stayed 8-6 until the fourth quarter. SCHS freshman running back J.D.

Robinson padded the Spartans' lead a 7ryard run with 9:44 left in the fourth quarter to make it 14-6. Ryan Honea added a 42-yard TD catch from Zach Woodbury later in the fourth quarter to wrap up the scoring. Robinson carried nine times for 152 yards. Woodbury' completed 2 of 11 passes for one touchdown. Honea caught two passes for 62 yards and one touchdown.

Raymond Thompson had nine tackles tackles including a sack for Spring Creek, one interception and a fumble recovery. Thomas Slater finished with a fumble recovery and the interception return. Robinson also helped out defensively with seven tackles. Correction A girls' soccer player for the Golden Eagles was misidentified in i photograph in Friday's paper. The Indians' remained in fifth place after the defeat dropped their record to 3-7 with three ties. The top three teams in the division advance to the Nevada AAA League's northern zone playoffs. Coach Tom McLaren said that math-wise Elko could still be kicking in post-season play, but said it would require four flawless outings. "The ball is definitely in our hands," he continued.

"We have tq win the next four games." Two of those matches are with teams that Elko is chasing in the crowded field for an early November Spring Creek's Dana Garcia, center, chased Reed's Audrey Town-sell up Ruby View Drive during Saturday's varsity girls' race. "This is the coldest we've been all year long," Kimball said. EHS senior Raquel Wynne, still fighting a kidney infection, placed 34th. Other finishers were Kim Priest, 49th; Bobbie Keeney, 62nd; and Jacque Ivans, 63rd. i 119; 4, South Tahoe. 168; 5.

Galena's boys won the team title while Reed dominated the girls' team race.

Spring Creek's Dana Garcia finished second overall in the girls' race to help the Spartans' girls place third. Spring Creek's boys were 13th in the Nevada AAA League meet. The race was the last of the regular season for Elko's boys' team. The Indians will travel to Sparks on Friday for the Division I meet. Spring Creek is scheduled to run at the Incline Invitational at Saturday.

Last Saturday, Gerber took the early lead in the varsity boys' race but Butler passed him on the first hill and led the rest of the way. The EHS senior won in 17 minutes and 57 seconds on the hilly course. Gerber finished 11 seconds behind. There were 94 varsity boys entered. Butler seemed more concerned at the end about his teammates as several Elko runners got passed just before the finish line.

"We're not sprinting at the end," Butler pointed out. Douglas' Ryan Bentley, the defending AAA state champion, finished eighth. Other Elko finishers were Ed Wynne, 14th; Jeff Salisbury, 24th; Sean McGinty, 35th; Ralph Betan-court, 43rd; Rod Billington, 61st; and Aaron Briggs, 75th. The big race was a good sign for Elko's boys heading into post-season. "Everybody's here and it gives us a good indication of where we're at," Elko coach Leon Reyes commented.

"We are all within reach," he said, noting that only three or four points seperate the three teams. "We're playing well enough right now," he said. "If the team stays aggressive and plays well we still standa chance of pulling it off." The Indians out shot the Greenwave 50-10, but Fallon netted a pair while Elko could get only the single goal. Todd Copenhaver executed a corner kick off an assist from Bobby Hogg at 10 minutes in the first half to account for Elko's lone score and give the Indians a 1-0 lead. Fallon tied the score 10 minutes later with a goal that came from the field after Elko goalie Josh Brown blocked a penalty shot and the match was tied 1-1 after the first half.

"Poor defensive positioning let a long shot through," McLaren explained about the Greenwave's game-winning goal in the second half. The Indians were denied a tie on a goal erased by a penalty. this year. "They beat Elko, 20," Reeder said. "We were told they were undefeated coming in here, so that's good for us." Spring Creek scored first on a two-yard run by junior running back Sean Gingerich in the first quarter.

Jeff Taylor kicked the extra point. Sparks made it 7-6 later in the quarter when Moss broke loose on a 48-yard run. The kick failed. But Spring Creek pulled away in the second quarter when Corey Cole recovered fumble in the endzone after Sparks' punter was hit and the ball squirted away from him. Taylor's kick made it 1W at halftime.

In the third quarter, Spring Creek scored again on a lyard run by junior fullback Sam Finau. Quarterback Micah Kraintz passed to Levi Harkness for the conversion. Sparks answered with a 90-yard kickoff return by Loudenberg to cut the margin to 22-12, but Spring Creek scored the last TD in the fourth quarter. Finau got the clincher with a two-yard run, and Taylor kicked the PAT. Finau finished the game with 114 yards rushing.

Gingerich added 97 yards. Both had 17 carries. Kraintz ran 13 times for 72 yards. Kraintz completed a 16-yard pass to Cole. Defensively, Gingerich had seven tackles.

I F.Iko. Led by strong running and a smothering defense, Spring Creek High School's football team won its third straight game as the Spartans beat Sparks' junior varsity, 29-12. The non-conference game was played at Spring Creek. "Offensively, we played extremely well. We rushed for over 283 yards so we had a good night running the ball," SCHS coach Greg Reeder pointed out "They ended up with probably only 70 yards all night, and 48 of it came on one play so defensively we pretty much held them in check." Spring Creek fielding its first varsity football team in history saw its season record improve to 3-4 (2-2 conference).

The Spartans return to Nevada AA League conference action Friday afternoon when they play at Independence. Kickoff is at 1:30. While Spring Creek did its job Saturday, the Spartans' playoff hopes suffered a serious setback when Hawthorne beat Yerington in another conference game. The win all but insured Hawthorne will get the division's second and final playoff berth. "I think that basically shuts us out but I dont know that for a fact," Reeder said, but he added his team plans to finish the season strong regardless.

"We're going to prepare to play two league games and win both of "Independence isnt going to be an easy game for us. They're been in a lot of close games just like we were," Reeder added. TheyYe got a lot of things you cant coach. You cant coach speed. We expect to have a battle." In last Saturday's game.

Spring Creek dominated a Sparks' JV team which beat Elkos JV team earlier.
