Kevin Nelson and Mike Mullin both hit two-run homers for Elko. Mullins' circuit shot came in the second inning and Nelson hit his in the fourth. Manuel Alvarado and Jake Miller both had two hits.

Joe Lostra and Derek McCoy both added one Paul Wagner pitched for Tonopah. "He didn't throw hard but he had this huge curve ball the boys couldntlayoff of," Miller reported. Elko stormed back to blank Yerington, 8-0, yesterday as Alvarado swatted two home runs and a double, drove in five runs and pitched four innings (2 hits, 8 strikeouts, 2 walks). Tony Richardson threw the last two frames (2 hits, 3 strikeouts). Alvarado, playing center field, also threw out a runner at home plate in the sixth inning to start a game-ending double play.

Nelson and Mike Anchando both added two hits for Elko. Miller, Lostra, Mullin and Sequoia Johnny each added one hit. Tony Guerrero and Ricky Koontz pitched for Yerington. Despite impressive starts, the Elko and Ruby Mountain Little League Baseball all-star teams both found themselves trying to stave off elimination today in losers' bracket games at the District III Tournament in Fallon. Elko is 2-1 so far with wins over Winnemucca and Yerington sandwiched around a loss Saturday to White Pine.

Ruby Mountain's all stars are 1-L Elko was scheduled to play Battle Mountain at 3 today while Ruby Mountain which includes Spring Creek, Carlin and Wells players was slated to face Winnemucca at 3 today. Finals for the double-elimination tournament start Friday. The district champion advances to the state tournament in Reno. Ruby Mountain opened play Saturday with a stunning 4-0 win over host Fallon. "They've won this rural tournament four years in a row" Ruby Mountain manager Dan Kessler pointed out Danny Naranjo pitched a three-hitter for the Ruby Mountain team, striking out 10 batters.

Mark Kessler had two doubles for the winners and Ernesto Bautista added a single and a double. Ruby Mountain scored two runs in the first inning and two more in the fifth to support Ruby Mountain lost, 119, last night to White Pine. "We gave that one away," said Kessler, whose team led 3-0 but then allowed eight straight runs. "We outhit them 18-12, Kessler pointed out Ruby Mountain starter James Kikumoto took the loss. Bautista also pitched.

Elko's 10-year olds play First-year all star team to debut today at Dayton Carlin motocross Elko's youngest baseball players will seek to make history of their own this week when they try for Nevada's first 9-10 year-olds' Little League Baseball state crown. Elko will be joined by 11 teams in the field at Dayton: Reno, Fernley, Fallon, Yerington, Silver Sage, Battle Mountain, Hawthorne, Tonopah, Dayton, Pahrump and Winnemucca.

Elko's first game was set against Winnemucca at 8 a.m. today; the final game of the first round, according to the tournament director. Developing this age group for the future was the reason a decision was L. made to have a state tournament, according to assistant coach Jeff Zander. Top pitchers include Tyler Still and Danny Eklund.

Infielders on the roster include Eric Goicoechea, Patrick Jones, Jeff Wines, K.C. Cody, Dain Uriarte and Brent Elmore. Outfielders include Matt Zander, Dereck McGhee, Brett Diaz, Jory Rhoden and Marco Huerta. The catcher is Pedro Marin. Zander said the roster is strong defensively, possesses tough pitching and has some exceptional hitters for 10-year olds.

In terms of hitting. Zander noted but not unexpected. "They've won the 13-year old state tournament, 14-year old state and now they're all together as 15-year-olds," Elko coach Gaylen Christean noted. Chris Genung was Elko's starting pitcher, relieved by Ray Sproul and Frank Lespade. The trio allowed 18 hits and five walks.

They struck out two batters. Elko batters had only two hits in the game with Genung collecting both. The game was halted after Elko scored once in the bottom of the sixth on a hit by Genung, a stolen base, a ground ball and a passed ball. "It actually was a pretty good game until that sixth inning," Christean said.

Vivian selects Jamestown College in North Dakota ko Babe Ruth Baseball's 14-15 age class all-star team lost, 12-1, to host Carson City but remained alive with a 1-1 record in the Area II Tournament. The tournament is being played in Carson City. Elko, which beat South Reno Washoe Valley on Friday, plays South Tahoe at 8:30 tonight for a berth in the state tournament. If Elko wins tonight, it plays Carson in the area championship game at 7:30 tomorrow. The top two teams advance to the state tournament.

For Elko, the loss to the group of Carson players was disappointing Ladies' golf Ruby View Golf Course's women's association will hold the first round of match play tomorrow. There will be a tournament of the day for women not participating in the match play event. Golfers should sign up at 7:30 a.m., and a shotgun start is set for 8 a.m. Spring Creek Golf Course will hold a two-gal scramble tournament on Thursday for the Spring Creek lady golfers. PJ 738-4078 Shay Vivian, who graduated this spring from Elko High School, has signed a letter of intent to compete for Jamestown College of Jamestown, N.D., in women's basketball and track and field. Vivian was a three- year member of Elko's girls' basketball team, including the Indians' 1994 and 1995 AAA state champion squads. The 5-foot-lO guardforward won all-state hon- Vivian orable mention for the Indians, aver aging eight points, five rebounds and four assists last year. Elko lost only four games during the two-year span. In track, Vivian holds the EHS school record in the high jump at 5-foot-6 and also was a top triple jumper.

"She has been a part of championship basketball teams in Elko and she can be a valuable performer both in track and basketball for the Jimmies.

"Shay is an accomplished jumper in track and has played several roles well in her high school basketball career." Vivian, the daughter of Peggy Vivian of Ashland, Mont, plans to study accounting while playing for the Jimmies, who compete in the North Dakota College Athletic Conference. Jamestown College's women's basketball team was 19-7 last season and was ranked 20th in the NAIA national poll. Both Elko and Spring Creek High Schools are opening their weight rooms for fall sports conditioning, noted football coaches at the schools.

Both schools' weight rooms are open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Elko's is open from 8 to 10 a.m. and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Spring Creek's room will be open from 6 to 9 a.m. and 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Spring Creek has set a meeting July 26 for parents of prospective football players. Elko's ninth annual Britannia Soccer Camp is scheduled July 31 through Aug. 4. The five-day camp is for players ages 5-18, and is taught by traveling British coaches. Players can attend half-day sessions from either 9 a.m.

to noon or 2 to 5 p.m., or full-day sessions. The league, which has two age classes, is open to players 9 through junior high school.

The signup fee is $50 per player, and $30 for each additional player from the same family. Players must be accompanied by a parent to signups. The league's draft is Aug. 14-15, and games start Sept 9. For more information persons can phone Dave Stout at 753-5593.

Girls ages 8 through 14 are invited to sign up for the McKillip Stock Girls' All-Sports Camp, planned July 24-28 in Elko. Certified instructors Sandie McKillip and Greta Stock will teach several sports including volleyball, Softball, tumbling, tennis, dance, soccer, basketball, water activities and rhythmic jump roping. An overnight slecpover also is planned at the police station gym. The cost is $160, which includes a camp T-shirt and dinner and breakfast for the sleepover.
