Friday, July 14, 1995 ELKO DAILY FREE PRESS, Elko, Nevada 11 Sports Elko in little League final Dumps Ruby 1.5-0, on Alvarado 110-liitler 1 he was capable of doing," Miller said. Alvarado, who has allowed two runs in 22 innings in four tournament games, blanked Ruby Mountain. He struck out nine and walked two. He has 44 strikeouts so far. Miller got the pitching he needed, but it was the hitting he didn't expect after four one-run games.

"I didn't think we would hit like we that," he said. "The bats woke up and that's what happened." Ruby Mountain's pitching corp of Mark Kessler, Tony Greener, Ernesto Baustista and Mickey Cochran gave up nine hits and eight walks while striking out four. Elko scored six times in the third. One inning later, Alvarado stroked a three-run homer. Alvarado had three hits in the game to lead Elko.

Derek McCoy and Jack Hastings chipped in one double each. Chris Powers will pitch tonight for Elko. If another game is needed Saturday, Miller said Alvarado will go again. Miller noted Powers has a good fastball and the ability to keep the ball down. Miller said he expected those factors to frustrate White Pine hitters who like pitches up in the strike zone.

"He has real good rhythm, and if he gets in groove he can throw consistent strikes," Miller said. "If we start hitting the ball, I don't think they can stay with us." Miller believed White Pine will be under a lot pressure tonight to close out the tournament. "I think mentally we are going to have the advantage going into the game," he said. "I'm sure they don't want to face Alvarado." Elko's 9-10 all stars in today's state finals Only White Pine stands in the way of a 1995 District III Little League Baseball title for Elko after it beat Ruby Mountain, 15-0, yesterday on a no-hitter by Manuel Alvarado. The major division tournament is being played in Fallon.

If Elko can stop White Pine tonight, the teams would play again tomorrow in the double-elimination tournament. White Pine has a 5-0 record, while Elko is 6-1 after playing seven games in seven days. "I Last night's game was kind of a shocker," said Elko manager Tom Miller, although he was confident Alvarado could pitch well. i By David Scholz A lOrun sixth inning propelled Elko County Little League Softball major all stars yesterday to the District III title, giving the winners a berth in next weekend's state tournament in Las Vegas. Elko won 15-1. The locals built a 5-0 lead through the fifth inning when Winnemucca managed its first run. But after being shut down in the fifth inning, Elko went on to build what coach Burt Sargent interpreted later to the kids as "a cushion." "We are going to Las Vegas said Elko catcher Sarah Swanson as the team began celebrating. Kelly Miller, Elko's starting pitcher, struck out seven batters and allowed two hits and five walks before tiring in the sixth inning.

Jennifer Sargent finished up, ending the game with a strikeout. Elko, paced by a 4 for 4 effort by Dolcie Leak, had 16 hits in the game. Other multiple hitters were Sylvia Lopez, who had a triple and double; Swanson with three singles; and Miller, who singled and doubled. Sargent noted his players had the bats, but it was just a little scary to see the girls wait to use them. "But that shows good character," he said of their ability to score runs in bunches.

More noteworthy of the 10-run outburst was that it came after two were out in the sixth inning, Sargent added. On top of the offensive onslaught it demonstrated, Elko again delivered consistency in the field. The girls played excellent defense," Sargent said. The Winnemucca win capped off a tournament in which Elko committed only three errors. Sargent said the girls had a day off today, and were to resume practices tomorrow.

Workouts will continue through Tuesday or Wednesday before they head to Las Vegas. The winner advances to the divisional tournament July 29 through Aug. 3 in Gallup, N.M. Sargent said the goal now is helping the players prepare to take "their game to the next level." Base stealing, pickoff plays and bunting are some of the more technical aspects of the game that Sargent said the girls would be working on. As the kids revel in their acheive-ment, Sargent emphasized it is as much "a community championship" for the all the support the team has received.

The Devils and their landlord held a news conference to announce after months of heated negotiations and threats of a move to Nashville that the NHL champions will play at the Meadowlands next season and have the framework of a deal to keep them here through 2007. However, for the Devils to stay the next 12 years, they would have to secure the major loan before Sept. 15, the deadline the team and the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority set for formalizing their agreement.
