August 30, 1922: This year's Elko County Fair program of rodeo, wild west bucking and racing will rival any show held in the West.

All of the best riders from the big wild west shows in Oregon, California and Utah will be here. The daily racing program is the most elaborate ever attempted in the state outside of Reno. Each day, in addition to six big rodeo events, there will be five races with purses of $3,000. Livestock, agriculture and horticulture exhibits will be bigger and better than ever. The woman's department will be especially interesting.

Something doing every minute, day and night Join the crowd and help make this year's show a red letter event in the history of Elko County. 50 YEARS AGO August 29, 1947: A colorful parade started off the 1947 Elko County Fair today. The crowd at the fairgrounds was the biggest in the fair's history. During the Pep Rally, which 1,500 attended, Miss Betty Detweiler was crowned Queen of the Fair by Gov.

Ike Woodhouse, a mere 79 this summer and one of the greatest boosters of the Elko County Fair, holds some kind of record, he has not missed a fair since they began 20 years ago. He also has the distinction of placing a bet on each race run during the fair, year after year. There has hardly been a year since the fair began that Ike hasnt entered horses to race and this year is no exception.

The racing card has 140 horses entered with the total purse of $15,000. Bing Crosby will sponsor a race for Elko County owned and bred two1 year-olds. Many local owners are expected to enter their mounts. A spectacular fireworks display will be shown on Sunday evening courtesy of Harold's Club. Friday's topic: Why celebrate Labor Day? Answer The UPS strike is over; It honors wage slaves like me; No question, it's three days off work. Answer garnered 68 percent by Friday afternoon. Kraus didn't know if Chelsea, a computer user, had seen the survey.

A call to first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton's press office, Which handles questions about her daughter, was not immediately returned. "If she suggests a poll she wants to do, we would do it," he said. "If she writes in we're there." Kraus, who graduated from Stanford three years ago, remains enthusiastic about the school's culture, which he describes as open and fun-loving as well as intellectually challenging. And he has some advice of his own to offer Chelsea about Stanford: "Go full throttle and enjoy all the opportunities it has to offer," he said; "Don't worry just enjoy it." GAMNY SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Netizens have some advice about college for soon-to-be first freshman Chelsea Clinton: Adopt the Republican position at debates and don't drop names of world leaders.

Especially Dad's. Internet search-engine company Excite Inc. is giving users the chance to offer cybertips to the president's daughter, who starts classes at Stanford University next month. The six Stanford grads who started the company four years ago are, well, excited that Chelsea chose "The Farm" over Ivy League schools. And they want to help her and make her laugh with tongue-in-cheek pointers about campus life, said Joe Kraus, one of the founders.

So this week Excite ran the first of a planned series of surveys asking its 2.5 million daily users how the first daughter should handle the challenges of attending Stanford, "Several thousand" people responded to the initial poll, which asked how Chelsea can survive political science class. Kraus expected participation to rise as Sept. 24, the first day of classes, approaches. "But you know what I would really love? If she would answer one of the polls see what advice she gives herself," Kraus, Excite's vice presi dent, said. Excite, based in Redwood City, is one of several companies with online sites allowing computer users to find information on the Internet.

Visitors to the site also can check out the "Daily Excite Poll," a light-hearted survey about current events and popular culture. The survey about Chelsea solicited votes for one of three suggested pieces of advice for surviving poli sci. Sixty percent went with "Don't start sentences with 'My Dad says Twenty-seven percent voted for "Take the Republican Platform at every debate." And 13 percent advised not to drop the names of heads of state. Five more polls concerning the Clintons' only child will run each Monday starting next week, Kraus said. Some of the topics likely will come from among the hundreds suggested by Excite users.

"What's really interesting is that those people not only take the poll but want to write a poll suggest questions about Chelsea Clinton," he said. One possible future topic, suggested by a Stanford student, explores a cure for possible homesickness.
