Elko major baseball all-stars host state hits in the second, third and fourth innings to end the game on the 10-run rule. The big inning was the second when Reno scored eight runs. Reno West 12, Elko 4 In the final game of the night, Reno West jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings to eliminate the home team. Will Hunter had three hits to lead the winners. Tom Taber and Josh Leuthold pitched. Elko mounted a small comeback in the fourth inning when it pushed across three runs. Jack Hastings, Joe Dangaran and Mickey Cochran scored. Still was 3-for4 with Jay Kunip and the host Elko County team both took a bow last weekend and four teams stayed undefeated as Nevada's 14-year-olds' Babe Ruth Baseball League state tournament began at Kump Field. The tournament continues through this Friday, with the champion advancing to the Pacific Southwest Regional tournament in Midvale, Utah. Kump was honored in Saturday's opening ceremony by city and league officials for his 31 years as Nevada's state commissioner.

He was honored with plaques, a seat cushion and a city proclamation marking Saturday as "Jay Kump Day." He and his wife, Charlotte, were escorted by Santa Claus, a character Kump often portrays for children at Christmas time. The nine teams playing in the tournament then went to work, and four remained perfect going into tonight's games. Two games are at 5 p.m. Fallon will play Carson City on the upper field, and North Valley will take on South Tahoe on Kump Field. The 8 p.m.

game will pit unbeaten South Reno against Sparks American. Sparks American inflicted the first of Elko County's two losses, rallying for a 10-6 victory on Saturday night. Reno West then ousted the locals, 124, last night. Reno West has a bye tonight in the losers' bracket SATURDAY'S GAMES Fallon 9, South Tahoe 5 Fallon jumped to a 5-0 lead and held on as pitcher Tony Guillen held South Tahoe at bay until being relieved by Ken Galbraith in the seventh inning. Guillen had two hits for Fallon, Evan Peters doubled in a run in the first inning and third baseman Derek Johnson finished with three RBIs.

South Tahoe third baseman TJ. Prevost hit the first home run of the tournament, clearing the left field fence in the seventh inning. Brandon Lee had three hits. Chris Hannum and Ryan Cullen pitched. Carson 16, Sparks Nat 12 Carson scored two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to snap an 11-11 tie.

Shane Van Zant hit a three-run homer in the first inning and added a pair of two-run doubles to lead Carson, which trailed 84 early. Tom Evans, Nick Gitthens, Chris Mclntyre and Sean Hornback each were credited with two hits. Bobby Nylen and Van Zant yz a Hi Marvel fourth in high school rodeo finals pitched. Sparks American 10, Elko 6 Elko rallied from a 5-0 deficit to go ahead, but Sparks American plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win, Dave Mosher was the winning VaJ Lj Ala Jy three RBIs and a run scored. Matt Zander was 2-for4 with two runs scored. In the first game, Danny Eklund pitched, giving up nine hits and nine walks in 4 23 innings.

Elko allowed two home runs in the game, including a game-winning three-run shot by Ron Lincoln of Fallon. Elko's three hits, all singles, were done by Matt Zander, Tyler Dillion and Derrick McGee. Elko will host the state tournament July 25-29 at Ernie Hall Field against the Las Vegas district champion and the Reno area district champion. Officials will decide the schedule and format today. Clint Knutson of Gillette, won the steer wrestling title and Lee McKnight of Cedar City, Utah, defended her title in goat tying.

Tiffani Burton of Eagle gave Colorado its only national title when she won both the short go and the national crown in barrel racing. Make A Wish golf tourney slated Friday Elko's Make A Wish Foundation will hold a benefit golf tournament at 8 a.m. Friday at Ruby View Golf Course. The four-person best ball scramble will have an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

The entry fee is $50 plus green fees, and lunch will follow play. All par-3 holes will have "hole in one" prizes. Prizes also are slated for closest to the pin, longest drive, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 13th place. In addition, those who have collected donationns will be submitted to a drawing pool for special prizes. Golfers can sign up at Cellular One in the East End Mall or contact Joe Aguirre at 738-5047 after 5 p.m.

Women's softball awards All women softball players, guests and sponsors are invited to the 1997 Elko Women's Slowpitch Softball League awards picnic at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27, at the main horseshoe pit area across from the Cedar Street softball complex. First-, second- and third-place awards along with sportsmanship and sponsorship awards will be given out at 3 p.m. Officers for the 1998 season will also be elected at the banquet Elko outdoor volleyball Elko grass volleyball play is being held on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning at 5 p.m. at Johnny Ap-pleseed Park across from Kump Field.

All interested players are welcome. The final tournament is The King Queen of Grass tournament Aug. 9-10. Formats include men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles and are divided into and novice divisions depending on the number of participants. Tournament entry forms will be made available at the park during regular Tuesday and Thursday play.

Spring Creek volleyball Spring Creek High School's annual volleyball camp will be held Aug. 11-15. The fifth annual camp is held by Canyon Volleyball, organized by Tom McGowan, head men's coach for national runner-up BYU. He also has been an assistant coach for the U.S.

Olympic team. The camp is open to girls who will be entering grades 7-12 next fall, and the cost is $115. For more information phone SCHS at 753-5575. Connelly tossed four shutout innings before leaving as the winning pitcher in a 9-2 victory. Katie Marvel of Battle Mountain finished fourth in the girls cutting event and Holly Alley of Wendover finished fourth in the bull riding event at the National High School Finals Rodeo in Pueblo, Sunday, placing the highest of all Nevada competitors. Team honors went to Oklahoma with 5,050.59 points with Texas runner-up at 4,429.42. Marvel scored 426 points while first place winner, Susan Welch of Texas scored 431 points. Alley scored 200 points, seven behind first-place winners Cole Mewbourn of Texas and Danny Varnadore Jr.

Other Nevada athletes that placed were Alyssa Barnes of Minden, fifth, in girls cutting with 425 points; Marvel Murphy of Fallon, 17th, in girls cutting with 411 points; Bryce Barnes of Minden, 18th, in boys cutting with 409.5 points; Halene Gardner of Winnemucca, 10th, in goat tying; Suzanne Montero of Winnemucca, 13th, in goat tying; Don Tatro of Carson City and Ryan Rogers of Reno, 20th, in team roping; Justin Glover of Fallon. 17th, in saddle bronc riding and Snuff Kolvet of Fernley, 15th, in steer wrestling. Marvel and Kale Knittle of Fallon were recipients of National High School Scholarships. Marvel received a WranglerNHSRA academic scholarship for $2,500 while Knittle received a NHSR foundation scholarship for $500.

Nevada's 39-member team includes Elko County students Tilly Van Norman, John Wright and Kris Jonas.
