Friday, June 23, 2000 ELKO DAILY FREE PRESS, Elko, Nevada A9 Local sports Elko swimmers to hold home meet on Saturday and Sunday SsV'i i Yankees wap up Ruth title 7J aSfc. S3' By STEVE COLLINS The Elko Swim Team is set, once again, to make a big splash this weekend. Tomorrow and Sunday the team will host its annual invitational. Each day, warmups will begin at 8 a.m. and the meet will start at 9 a.m.

The team, which has been in existence at least 20 years, is the defending champion of its invitational. Last year, the team handily came in first, scoring 907 points, more than double that of second place Boise YMCA, which had 394. The year before, Elko swimmers splashed to an 832 point victory, well ahead of second place Boise YMCA, which was second with 568. This year the team has a new coach to help swimmers meet their goals. Elizabeth Finley, who was raised in Washington and moved to Elko in 1992, has a coaching and swimming background.

When she was in high school she coached adults between 25 and 50 years old. She later swam at Pacific Lutheran University and went to the Collegiate Nationals four years. For 24 times she was all-American in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke and the 200- and 400-yard individual medley and she was national champion in the 200-yard individual medley and was second in the 400-yard individual medley. Now her focus is on the Elko Swim Team. She over- Starting times (both days) warmups at 8 a.m., opening events at 9 a.m.

sees the team overall and works with the older swimmers. "I have a couple of 12-year-olds, but basically I work with those 13 and up," she said. Susan Phinisey coaches swimmers between 9 and 12 years old and Kelly Ostler works with swimmers 8 years old and younger, those just starting out, who need a lot of personalized, individualized help with strokes. "I think everybody on my part of the team has worked hard and has a lot of endurance," Finley said. "We're working on sprints, so everybody who is in the meet should have best times in at least half of their events that they have entered.

Everybody from our team who is in the meet should come away feeling like they have accomplished something since we started swimming back in February or March," Finley said. Finley said a number of teams should be at the meet, including swimmers from Idaho, Battle Mountain, Winnemucca and Eureka. She said Eureka may have a full team at the meet this year. "This will be the first meet for Natalie Crooks since last summer. She should do well," Finley said of the 15- Rally to win 9-8, all-stars named It took a while Wednesday for the Spring Creek Yankees to play like champions but, in the end, they did as they rallied to nip the Marlins, and wrap up the Elko County Babe Ruth Baseball 14-16 year-olds' league title.

"You guys only have three innings of baseball left this season," Yankees manager Enos Vega reminded his players after they fell behind, 6-3, after three innings. The team rallied for one run in the fourth inning, two in the fifth on a pair of errors, and three runs in the sixth. The outburst including an RBI-triple by Luke Anderson. He scored on a single by Zach Vega to put the team ahead, and Vegas came around on passed balls for an insurance run. The Marlins scored one in the sixth and none in the seventh, and fell short Jeremy Etchemendy was the winning pitcher in relief.

Vega had two hits. For the Marlins, Matt Zander had three hits. Zander and Miguel Garcia pitched. The victory gave the Yankees a final record of 12-4 with one tie. The Giants finished second by one game as they posted a record of 11-5-1.

The league also announced its all-star teams yesterday. The teams include players from Elko, Spring Creek, Wells, Carlin and Eureka. The Yankees rallied to win, 9-8, and wrap up the 14-16 year-olds' season title. Bob Burrows is the manager.

Steve Glaser and Jamie Crigler are coaches. The 15-year-olds' team features Luke Anderson, Tyler Dillon, Jeremy Etchemendy, Eric Goicoechea, Patrick Jones, Julio Lara, Miguel Marin, Pedro Marin, Derrick Olen, Tyler Still, Dain Uriarte, Zach Vega and Jeff Ward. Jon Uriarte is managing, with Mitch Matovina and Ryan McDonough coaching. Jonathan Morales, David Neumann, Erik Nunez, Bryan Reinschmidt and Brad Richins. Gaylen Christean will manage with Dave Neumann coaching.

The 14-year-olds' team includes Will Burrows, Justin Byington, Bradnon Charles, Miguel Garcia, Ricky Griswold, Cole Hustead, Kevin Kikumoto, Dane Nelson, Gerald Nelson, Jay Rose, Ramon Salaz, Cody Schroeder, Don Travers, Trace Wells and Jeff Wines. year-old. "Ashley Lauver should do well, as should Leslie Gilbertson," the coach said. Lauver, who has been with the team for two years, has been to regionals twice in the 50- and 100-yard butterfly. "There's Bart Steninger, of course, who will be swimming.

Josh Randall is swimming. He should do well. He's 17, so he's one of the older guys. We've got Shauna and Sam Guttry and we've got some newer kids, like Andrea Buckingham. This will be her first meet," Finley noted.

The weather is predicted to be warm, perfect for the outdoor swim meet in Elko's 25-meter pool. Finley noted the meet will be across from the Elko City Park, where a city picnic will be going on. The coach invited people who are in the area for the picnic to stop by the pool and watch the meet "The meet is the same day as the picnic, so we should have a lot of spectators. There are a lot of local kids, so many people will know at least three or four different kids by name, either because they have had them in school or the adults work with their parents at the mine or they attend the same church. "It should be a fun, short meet.

If people want to come down, if they're thinking about swim team, if their kids like swimming and they want to see what a swim meet looks like before they get involved, this will be a good chance to come down and see what it's like, look at a meet go over to the picnic, play at the park, and have fun," Finley said. Finley mentioned one more reason why spectators may want to attend the swim invitational. "Seeing this meet might give people an idea, when they watch the Olympics in September, what they're looking at what a swim meet is all about, so they can watch informed TV." For the Elko swimmers, the invitational will help them warm up for a couple of upcoming big meets. On July 7-9 the Idaho State Championships will be in Caldwell, Idaho, and on July 28-30 the Snake River Summer Championships will be in Twin Falls, Idaho. "We're hoping this weekend will be one of our team's bigger invitational meets," Finley Weekend events include Sunday's Gambler's Run (Sieve CollimFrat Pirns) Elizabeth Finley said she's ready to coach her first Elko Swim Team invitational.

The meet will be tomorrow and Sunday. Although she's new to the team, she has plenty of coaching and swimming experience.
