Babe Ruth 14 all stars set To start state tournament play Saturday in Reno practice," Leniz noted. However, the team still has plenty of experience. Many members 'competed in two winter tournaments, with Leniz as their manager.

"That was mainly the reason I took the kids down to St. George (Utah and Wen-dover), to give them those extra games," Leniz said of the upcoming state tournament. "We're pretty excited about it" he added. Leniz coached the Angels during the regular season. Playing for this year's all stars are Dallas Boyer, Tyler Dillon.

Uriarte coached the Marlins and Vega coached the Spring Creek Cardinals. The team's two starting pitchers are Ward and Still. The team also has several good relievers. The team's strongest point, though, may be its speed in the outfield with Zander, Miguel Marin, Boyer and either Dillon or Ward. That should help because the Hug High field is 30 feet larger all the way around than Elko's.

Pedro Marin is a solid defensive catcher who has improved greatly, and also gives Elko a strong bat. "Last year, they were two of the top teams in the 13 year old state tournament," Leniz reported. A loss Friday would put Elko County into a 4 p.m. game Saturday against the South RenoReno West loser.

The finals are scheduled for next Thursday, starting with a second game to follow if needed. Nevada's state champion advances to regionals in Elk Grove, Calif, with their arrival set for Aug. 4. The locals gave Carson City a scare in Saturday's opener, losing 8 7. Elko briefly led 4 3 going into the bottom of the fifth, when Carson went ahead to stay. Kenny Sherman hit a two run homer in the top of the seventh to get Elko close, but it couldn't score again. Elko had left the bases loaded in both the second and third innings without scoring. James Kikumoto pitched into the fifth inning, when he was relieved by Michael Daley.

Offensively, Kikumoto had an RBI-double and Dalev hit an RBI single. On Sunday, the team was ousted by Fallon, 22 7.
